College is a major expense, and it is probably safe to say that every college student looks for ways to save money. Some students choose to live off campus, or look to cut costs on food and transportation expenses. In addition, here are some other places a college student can look to save some money.
Look for alternatives to buying your textbooks at the college bookstore. The college bookstore is convenient but that convenience comes at a cost. With a little extra effort you can find a more affordable way to get your text books. There are websites where you can buy your books - new or used, rent books and download books.
Shop at the local Goodwill, Salvation Army or second-hand stores. These are great places to buy clothing and home furnishings. There is often good quality, "slightly used" merchandise to be found at a deeply discounted price. If you shop smart you can save a lot of money at these stores.
Look for activities to participate in on campus. Concerts, movies, lectures, sporting events and more, are all part of college life. These activities are often at no cost, or low cost, to students. The extra added bonus is that there is also not transportation related costs involved with on campus activities.
Last, but not least, do not use a credit card. Well, that is unless you are disciplined enough to pay the bill, in full, every month. A credit card is a very convenient but the interest can be very costly. So unless you commit yourself to will paying the entire bill every month, avoid credit cards. If you do not want to carry a lot of cash, then use checks or a debit card.
All college students should actively try to save money. Developing good habits while at college is a great first step towards financial security later in life. Think before you spend. There are ways to save money around every corner.
