A Filipino Maid Stands by Even When Help is Not Needed

By Alice Sy

There was a story about an ill-stricken woman, a cancer patient who resides in Florida. Her sad story was featured in Philippine Television. It was sad because at the end of her life, she had no family or friends left to ease her pain or share the burden; she only had one maid living in her house. The emotional factual story was featured in Philippine Television because that domestic helper is a Filipino Maid.

The story is heartwarming and interesting because viewers are taken aback by the tragic life of the American woman. It was a tear jerking series because her one and only maid was her only companion in life. What started as an annoying professional relationship turned into real friendship that neither life nor death can separate.

That's what makes the Filipino maid special. In the series, at a time when her employer was being rude and experiencing the most difficult time of her life, she insisted her faith and hope and never left her, not once. True enough, Filipinos indeed stand firm and strong beside their employers to prove their loyalty and devotion.

As the ill American woman grew weary and lifeless, her Filipino friend fought for her. It was because of this unique shared friendship that the story became inspiring. It was not a tragic story for the sick woman, she was not alone-she had somebody worth loving and trusting.

Life is not about numbers. Numbers of friends, numbers of success and failures. It's about loving and being loved by someone. The American woman though dying was inspired by the Filipino maid. She was released from her burden and finally enlightened. There was one woman fighting for her-and that's all she needed to be happy in life.
