It was a day that I will always recall, as it is the day that changed my life and my outlook on many things, including the necessity of gathering a decent collection of knives. My work as a claims adjuster sometimes means that I have to go visit people in rural locations such as a trip to a very isolated region of Montana. As I was driving, I slid on a snowy section of road and wound up trapped in a ditch.
I was stuck in a very isolated area and was not nearby to any inhabited places and worst of all, it was getting dark soon. I knew I was in big trouble and tried my best to get the car out of the ditch, but it was more than one person alone could handle. After attempting to get a signal on my cell phone, I decided to search through the car for anything that might help. Luckily, it was a car that I had borrowed from a coworker as the one I normally used was in the shop.
This guy was a knife aficionado, or at least he really liked them as he kept a large collection of knives in a leather case under the passenger seat. They were all shapes and sizes and were apparently used for many unique purposes, none of which were readily apparent to me. I sat down and considered my circumstances for a half hour or so and finally ended up taking one with a serrated edge out of the case.
I had discovered some matches in the glove compartment of the car and used the serrated edge to cut some kindling from the roadside trees. With the proper tools, it was a fast job and as the sun set, my crackling blaze was warming my hands. I hoped that the smoke or light from the fire might indicate to someone that I was there and in trouble.
As it got darker, I grew less hopeful, but when morning came, I heard a loud noise, which turned out to be a ranger vehicle passing through. I was rescued and was desirous to go about my business as usual. I'm glad that it worked out, because I was thinking that I might have to use one of those knives to hunt for my supper and skin and clean it. I hadn't had to do that, but I did spend some time the next day buying my own set for my own car.
